High Intensity Discharge Lights (HID)

Applications:

Traditionally for applications that require higher light intensities than fluorescent lighting, such as cereal, forage, citrus and C4 plants

Benefits:

  • Well-suited for promoting leafy plant growth
  • Can produce red and blue colored wavelengths rather easily
  • Produces less heat and brighter light than both incandescent and fluorescent bulbs
  • HID lamps produce most of their light in the red-orange-yellow spectrum, which promotes flowering

Considerations:

  • Tends to have a short lifespan
  • Generates intense heat and often must be a considerable distance from plants
